ALERT at North Anna ended

Dominion has announced the end of the alert status at North Anna after having started one reactor coolant pump at each of the two nuclear plants at that site.

  1. The main coolant pumps need grid power to run, is that right?

  2. @joffan: Correct. It also is true that the control rod power supply comes from the grid so that LOOP means instant reactor scram. Let me add for all our readers that PWR plants are VASTLY different from BWR plants, about which we've gone into so much detail on this site... so that cooling considerations are somewhat different.
